President holds discussions with coalition regarding the appointment of a member to JSC

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has held discussions with the party leaders of the coalition government regarding the appointment of a President’s member to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Spokesperson of the President’s Office Abbas Adil Riza said that the discussion has led to an agreement, and the President’s Member will be appointed this week.

Following the change of government, the position of Vice President of the 10-member Commission remains vacant. The position was previously held by former Attorney General Abdulla Muizz.

The Judicial Services Commission is made up of Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid, Supreme Court Judge Adam Mohamed, Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Didi, High Court Judge Abdulla Hameed, member appointed by the Parliament Gasim Ibrahim, Civil Service Commission President Mohamed Fahmy Hassan, Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, member appointed by the people Sheikh Shuaib Abdul Rahman and member appointed by lawyers Ahmed Rasheed.

JSC watches over judges and actions of judicial courts. Former ruling party MDP heavily criticised the courts and JSC.
