MDP holds simultaneous protests in various parts of Male

The protest last night began at Lonuziyaaraiy kolhu at around 9:30. People on foot and motorbikes were in scattered groups in different parts of Male’. This included a group near the residence of Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim, M. Seenukarankaage as well.

Protesters spent most time near Defence Minister’s residence. About 15 minutes into the protest near Seenukarankaage, more people joined and the entire area surrounding the house was taken over. The protesters were calling for his unconditional resignation, and for him to come out and meet the protesters. No unrest took place, even though people were gathered in this are for about 1.5 hours. They left when the Police arrived in the area.

Demonstrations also took place near Mulaku MP Abdulla Yameen’s residence and Male’ City Council on Majeedee magu. Their general demands were to hold an early election, to put an end to violence, resignation of President Mohamed Waheed’s government, and for President Waheed to not open the Parliament.

The protesters near City Council were calling for an early election and the reestablishment of justice. They threw bottles and similar objects at the Police. No serious unrest took place.

None of MDP leadership members or Parliament Members took part in last night’s protest.

The protests spreading over the entire city ended at around 12:30 at Lonuziyaaraiy kolhu.
