Maldives Police Service has started investigating a Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo councilman for threatening to set fire to a police speedboat.
Police Media Official told Sun that an investigation is underway involving a 34-year-old man who verbally threatened to set fire on the Thinadhoo Police Station speedboat. The threat was made to the boat's captain around around 9:45 p.m. on 8 January while the boat was docked in Gaafu Dhaalu Fares Maathoda. Police did not provide details of the suspect.
A source from Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo said the suspect under investigation is Thinadhoo Island Council Member Ali Shaam. According to the source, the court has ordered Shaam against any contact with the speedboat’s captain or crew until the investigation is complete.
Ali Shaam has carries terrorism charges for setting fire to a public building during the riots that followed the controversial change of power in February 2012.
