Large quantities of drugs confiscated from Maafushi Prison

Large amounts of drugs have been confiscated from inmates at the country’s largest correctional facility, Maafushi Prison, through a special joint operation by the Police and Maldives Correctional Service yesterday.

According to the police, an inspection of the inmates and their jail cell had yielded 50 pieces and 22 cellophanes of drugs, in addition to one bullet of suspected hash oil, and 5 consumed and discarded pieces of cellophanes.

The authorities also seized 15 mobile phones, 17 mobile phone batteries, 3 mobile phone chargers, 26 SIM cards, 5 storage SD cards and a knife. Police said the inmates who were concealing the items will be investigated and charged.

Police said that they have been receiving an increasing number of reports regarding phone calls from the inmates who to con people for money or try to obtain credit for their pre-paid phone numbers.

Police have also advised the public to be mindful of such activities and have communicated the message to the atolls through the local council offices. However, the public is showing cold support, police said.

“We advice the public to refrain from making large financial transactions on requests by unknown persons. We also recommend the public to ignore requests to send large amounts of Reload or Raastas credit to mobile phones,” said the Police.
