Maldives-India relationship peaked during the tenure of former President Gayoom: President

President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that bilateral relations between the Maldives and India peaked during the tenure of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

He made this remark during an interview with the local media before his meeting with former President Gayoom today. The meeting was held this morning at the President’s Office.

The purpose of former President Gayoom’s meeting with President Yameen was to congratulate President Yameen on conclusion of his successful state visit to India, and also to assure the President of the full support and cooperation of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), of which he is president, to the government.

Speaking to the media, President Yameen said that the close Maldives-India friendship began under former President Gayoom’s foreign policy which was characterized by mutual respect for each other’s sovereignty. The President further reiterated his government’s commitment to uphold the policies of the former President.

President Gayoom said that he hopes to see a mutually beneficial, cordial relationship existing between the Maldives and India.
