Labour Tribunal stops proceedings

The Labour Tribunal has stopped all proceedings after declaring that the terms of the tribunal’s President and Vice President have expired.

An official from the tribunal told Sun today that the terms of four of the seven-member tribunal have expired, including the terms of the president and vice president.

He said the tribunal still continues to accept cases but will not conduct proceedings on cases submitted after 28 December. However, the remaining four members will continue to conduct cases submitted before 28 December, the official said.

The tribunal’s regulation requires all cases to be conducted by a council with an odd number of members and hearings be chaired by the president or a member designated by the president.

Members to the Maldives Labour Tribunal are appointed for a five year term.
