A young victim of dengue from the island of Vaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll died today while under treatment in Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
IGMH confirmed the report, but did not give any further details.
A relative of Ahmed Shinah, 22, of Vaadhoo Dheroomaage said today that the deceased took treatment at Vilingili Hospital first, and doctors there also diagnosed that it was dengue. According to the relative Ahmed Shafeeq, IGMH doctors first said that they were not sure whether it was dengue or not, but they also said that there were symptoms of dengue.
Shafeeq said that the way Vilingili hospital organized the transfer caused a delay of six hours.
“When Shinah was taken to Kaan’dedhdhoo airport by his family, concerned persons in the airport didn’t get the information they had to get from the hospital. When the hospital was contacted they told that the documents would be with the nurse. Until an aircraft was confirmed he had to take treatment at Thinadhoo”, said Shafeeq.
However, the administrator of Vilingili Hospital Mr. Mohamed Fauzee denies any negligence on their part by saying that they had sent a nurse and oxygen with the patient, and the information required for airport personnel were with the nurse. Fauzee said that even though the information had been passed to the airport, there was a delay in confirming a seat.
“When the nurse gave the documents to the counter, they said that there were no arrangements for carrying oxygen with the patient. The Upper South National Authority made arrangements for the next day”, said Fauzee.
Fauzee stressed that there was no delay because of any negligence of Vilingili Hospital. This is the 10th death case this year since the outbreak of the killer fever, which is now under control.
