DNR to share database with councils

The Ministry of Home Affairs has signed an agreement with Local Government Authority (LGA) regarding sharing the database of Department of National Registration (DNR) with councils.

The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Home Affairs today, by Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer and Chairperson of LGA, Minister of Defence Mohamed Nazim.

Speaking at the ceremony, Umar Naseer said that this agreement would facilitate sharing of all necessary information by Atoll Councils and Island Councils with Home Ministry, which would benefit the councils as well as the public.

“This means we would receive information from Atoll and Island Councils immediately, including births, deaths, and other similar information. This also means that identity card numbers will be given within 24 hours of births,” he said.

Umar Naseer said that thus far, DNR’s database has only been shared with the police and the Immigration Department. These institutions are however not allowed change any information.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister Nazim said that the agreement signed today will play an important role in the empowerment of Atoll and Island Councils.

“All of DNR’s information will be shared through e-council. People living in the islands would no longer have to travel to Male’ to share information. Councils will receive information regarding their projects. This would also be a great help during elections,” he said.

Nazim said that high security features will be employed when sharing DNR’s information to ensure that it is not changed by LGA.
