Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that his decision to join ruling party Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) was not conditional on being given a post in the government, or anything else.
He said this while speaking to reporters after signing the membership form to join PPM.
“Our decision to join PPM is not conditional on anything. As I said before, today, the best thing for the country would be that we all work together,” he said.
He said that as a politician he will now work on behalf of PPM, and that his utmost priority at the moment is to support the government.
He highlighted that the country now has an elected government, and called on all groups to assist the government during its five-year term.
The council of Gaumee Itthihad Party (GIP) announced its decision to dissolve the party earlier today, and Dr Waheed and several senior officials of GIP joined PPM this evening.
When asked if he might act as a council member of PPM or hold a similar post within PPM in the future, Dr Waheed said that it "is a possibility”.
