GUADALAJARA, Mexico (AP) — Teenage striker Carlos Fierro scored his first professional goal to give Chivas a crucial 1-0 victory over Uruguay's Defensor Sporting in the group stage Copa Libertadores.
It was Chivas' first win in this season's tournament and lifts the powerful Mexican club to third spot in Group 7 with four points.
In other group matches on Tuesday, Brazil's Internacional defeated Bolivia's The Strongest 5-0, Paraguay's Nacional beat Venezuela's Deportivo Tachira 3-2, Lanus of Argentine defeated Ecuador's Emelec 1-0 and Peru's Alianza Lima had a 1-0 win over Uruguay's Nacional.
At Guadalajara, 17-year-old Fierro beat a defender and headed in a right wing cross in the 11th minute to score his first goal as a professional.
Diego Rodriguez thought he had scored an equalizer for Defensor in the 81st minute, when his spectacular overhead kick went into the net, but the referee disallowed the goal.
Defensor Sporting remains in last place in the group on three points, three behind leader Velez of Argentina.
In Group 1 match at Porto Alegre, Brazil striker Leandro Damiao scored three goals in two-time champion Internacional's rout of The Strongest.
Dagoberto volleyed in the first goal for Internacional in the fourth minute, with Damiao getting his first with a header three minutes later.
Damiao added his second in the 57th and completed his hattrick in the 73rd, improving to five goals in three games in this year's Copa Libertadores.
In Group 6, Pedro Fernandez opened the scoring in the 31st for Deportivo Tachira against Paraguay's Nacional.
German Cano equalized from the penalty spot in the 50th, following a deliberate handball from Deportivo Tachira's Jackson Clavijo, which earned him a red card. Cano added his second goal in the 67th, but Angel Chourio equalized seven minutes later.
Silvio Torales got the winner in the 81st.
Mexico's Cruz Azul leads the group with six points, two clear of Corinthians of Brazil and three ahead of Nacional.
In Tuesday*s Group 2 game, a goal from close range by Mariano Pavone in the 72nd was enough for Lanus to collect the three points in Argentina.
Emelec had Carlos Quinonez sent off in the 37th for a foul on the edge of the penalty area.
In Group 5, a diagonal cross over the defense was headed in by Jose Fernandez in the 16th, giving Alianza Lima the victory against a Nacional side that was reduced to nine players late in the match.
The Uruguayan club had Israel Damonte red carded in the 60th for appearing to elbow another player. Diego Placente was also sent off for Nacional 10 minutes later in a heated game.
In Wednesday's matches, Argentina's Arsenal plays Boca Juniors and Brazil's Fluminense hosts Venezuela's Zamora in Group 4. In Group 5, Libertad faces Vasco da Gama and Cruz Azul plays Corininthians in Group 6.
