Over MVR 100,000 has been stolen from Gaafu Dhaalu Kanduhulhudhoo Magistrate Court and island council office late last night.
Speaking to Sun, Kaduhulhudhoo island council president Rifau Rasheed said robbers had stolen MVR 65,000 locked inside the council safe after breaking into the island’s council office from the northern side of the building. He said the robbers had also broken into the island's magistrate court and stolen MVR 40,000 court’s safe.
In addition to the robberies, masked men had also entered and vandalized four local houses on the island last night, Rifau said.
The council president noted that robberies increased dramatically in Kanduhulhudhoo during the past few months and said that the council has repeatedly requested the Home Ministry to station police officers on the island.
“We have asked Home Ministry repeatedly, but policing has not started on this island. The locals are terrified,” Rifau said.
Police media official said that a police team has reached Kanduhulhudhoo and that an investigation into the robberies has begun.
