PORTLAND, Oregon (AP) — Scotland striker Kris Boyd scored the decisive goal as the Portland Timbers won their opening home game 3-1 over the Philadelphia Union on Monday night.
Boyd's first Major League Soccer goal came from Kalif Alhassan's cross and broke a 1-1 scoreline in the 66th minute.
Alhassan scored in the 76th minute to extend the eventual margin to two goals.
The Timbers conceded an own-goal in the 51st minute after Philadelphia midfielder Gabriel Gomez's hard shot from in front deflected off a Timbers defender and past goalkeeper Troy Perkins.
But the home team equalized three minutes later and Boyd scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th.
The former Glasgow Rangers and Middlesbrough forward joined the Timbers in the offseason.
The 28-year-old Boyd scored 164 goals in 296 appearances in the Scottish Premier League with Kilmarnock and Rangers and is the all-time leading scorer in the competition.
