KANSAS CITY, Kansas (AP) — Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper and captain Jimmy Nielsen is retiring, two days after making a pair of crucial penalty saves against Real Salt Lake to help his team win its first Major League Soccer championship since 2000.

The 36-year-old Danish footballer was MLS's goalkeeper of the year in 2012.

Prior to joining Kansas City in 2010, Nielsen spent 13 seasons at AaB Aalborg in Denmark's top league from 1995 to 2007, winning a championship in 1999. He also played for Vejle in Denmark and Leicester City and Millwall in England.
