The project to reclaim land to extend the runway of Seenu Gan Airport has resumed after being suspended for several weeks.
Managing Director of State Trading Organisation (STO) Adam Azim told Sun Online today that the project was halted to find a way to complete it without further delays.
“Agreements have been made between us and the government to ensure that the project is completed without further interruption. The contractor has said that it can be completed on schedule,” he said.
The project, which has been commissioned to Dubai’s Gulf Cobla, was halted due to financial difficulties.
“We couldn’t get oil because of outstanding payments to the contractor. But this problem has now been solved,” Azim said.
He said that efforts are ongoing to obtain a loan from Bank of Maldives (BML) for this project.
Only thirty percent had been completed when the MVR 11.7 million project, awarded to Gulf Cobla to be completed in five months, was halted three weeks ago.
