Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has commenced voting today for the party's local council election primary.
Elections of city, atoll and island councils will be conducted as the local council general election on 18 January 2014.
Voting will continue today from 9:00 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. in island constituencies of Gaafu Dhaalu Fares Maathoda, Laamu Hithadhoo, Laamu Kunahandhoo, Lhaviyani Naifaru, Haa Alif Ihavandhoo, Shaviyani Lhaimagu, Male’ City, Addu City, Fuvahmulah, Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Alif Dhidhdhoo, Lhaviyani Kurendhoo and Shivaiyani Lhaimagu.
Voting stations have been set up in each individual island. Male’ City voting is being conducted in the City Hall. Boxes for the island inhabitants living in Male’ have been set up in Mandhu College.
MDP’s elections committee member Ibrahim Waheed told Sun that a total of 44 ballot boxes have been placed across the country. A total of 185 party members are competing for the party tickets, where 17,455 members are eligible to vote, Ibrahim Waheed said.
MDP is scheduled to conduct voting for the remaining constituencies on Monday, 2 December.
