The government has decided to hold the official ceremony on the occasion of Fisherman’s Day this year in Dhaalu Meedhoo.
This was announced by Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Mohamed Shainee during his visit to Meedhoo on Friday evening.
Dr Shainee said that Fisherman’s Day 2013 will be marked in Meedhoo on 10 and 11 December.
He noted that Meedhoo is located in central Maldives where the fisheries sector is seeing fast development, and said that the government will make efforts to expand services to fishermen across the country.
He said that marking Fisherman’s Day in Meedhoo will facilitate networking opportunities for the people of the island, as officials in the fisheries industry will be invited to Meedhoo for the activities.
Speaking to Sun Online after addressing the public in Meedhoo, Dr Shainee said that it would not be easy to prepare for such a ceremony with just ten days left for Fisherman’s Day.
He said that he was happy, given the short time left, that the people of Meedhoo agreed to cooperate with the government to hold the ceremony in the island; and that it shows the Meedhoo people’s love for fishing.
Dr Shainee also thanked Meedhoo MP Siyam for his cooperation to hold the ceremony in Meedhoo.
He assured that the government has commenced efforts to fetch high prices for Maldivian fish products in the world market, including searching for new markets for Maldivian fish products.
He said that he was hopeful that new markets will welcome Maldivian fish products soon.
During this visit, the Fisheries Minister also visited Hulhudheli and Rinbudhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, where he met the councillors to discuss the challenges faced by fishermen in the islands.
