BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Newell's Old Boys failed in its bid to regain the Argentine first-division lead Sunday, settling for a 1-1 draw with Arsenal that kept San Lorenzo on top.
San Lorenzo, the favorite club of Argentine-born Pope Francis, drew 2-2 on Saturday at Atletico Rafaela, a result that left the door open for Newell's. But Newell's could not take advantage.
Marcos Caceres gave Newell's a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, before Mariano Echeverria equalized in the 49th.
San Lorezno has 31 points, one ahead of Newell's and two ahead of Lanus and Arsenal.
In other results Sunday, Lanus drew 0-0 with Gimnasia, and All Boys defeated Boca Junior 2-0. The loss was costly for Boca, which trails San Lorenzo by four points with two rounds remaining.
Boca was outclassed at home at La Bombonera with tennis stars Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on hand to watch.
Roberto Battion gave All Boys a 1-0 lead from a header in the 47th, and Mauro Matos make it 2-0 with a penalty seven minutes later.
In other results Saturday, Argentinos Juniors drew 1-1 with Quilmes and Olimpo downed Rosario Central 1- 0. Velez Sarsfield beat Godoy Cruz 2-1 on Friday.
