The accounts of Miladhoo Council have been frozen, after it failed to pay the salary and allowance of a council member as per s court ruling.
The council was ordered by Noonu Manadhoo Magistrate Court in July 2013 to pay MVR 65,220 to Noonu Miladhoo Council Member Nasrulla Mohamed as his salary and allowance for six months.
Vice President of Miladhoo Council Mohamed Ali said that they found out that the accounts were frozen when they went to the bank to withdraw money.
“We found out that the accounts had been frozen when we went to the bank to withdraw money today. When we contacted Manadhoo Court, they said that four accounts of the council have been frozen in relation to this case. A hearing on the case was held today as well,” he said.
The court was not available for a comment at the time of press.
Miladhoo Council said that it was not possible to pay Nasrulla’s salary because he did not attend work, and did not complete the documents necessary for paying his salary. Nasrulla, however, filed the case because was not able to carry out his duties as a councillor after he started attending work.
Manadhoo Magistrate Court said in its ruling regarding the case filed by Nasrulla, that Miladhoo Council had failed to obey orders issued by the Elections Commission and the Local Government Authority, and ordered the council to, within one month, pay the amount owed to Nasrulla as salary and allowance from June to November2012.
