MDP opens application for local council tickets

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday called for application of candidates interested in running on the party’s ticket for the upcoming local council elections.

Elections Commission on Tuesday announced that the local council election will be held on 18 January 2014.

MDP has said the party secretariat will receive application until 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, 28 November.

The party also said a primary will be held on 30 November if applications exceed the number of seats available for a particular constituency.

According to the Elections Commission, a total of 1118 seats will be elected during the upcoming election. This include 975 island council seats, 126 atoll council seats and 17 city council seats.
