Nasheed (Colonel) appointed Acting Leader of DRP

Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) has been appointed as Acting Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), following Ahmed Thasmeen Ali’s resignation.

Nasheed was appointed to this post at a meeting of DRP Council which ended moments ago, unanimously by the 13 members present at the meeting.

DRP has three deputy leaders, namely Mohamed Shareef, Thulusdhoo MP Rozaina Adam, and Vilingili MP Mohamed Ramiz.

Several senior members of DRP have decided to defect to Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Rozaina published a tweet on Saturday that she has decided to sign for MDP to "work for democracy, human rights, against torture & against a dictatorship."

In a tweet on Sunday, Thasmeen said he is proud to have supported MDP presidential candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed, and that the future lies with MDP.

Thasmeen ran alongside Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, as his running mate, in the first round of the annulled presidential election. He decided to back MDP for the fresh election following Dr Waheed’s bitter defeat, where they acquired just 5 percent of the vote.
