President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Maryam Azra Ahmed has said that education on human rights issues is necessary in order to create the spirit of human rights in the society. It would also help build a culture which respects human rights.
She said this at a ceremony held by HRCM to conclude a workshop for teachers working with human rights clubs in schools. The clubs help familiarise children with human rights issues and work towards building a culture which respects people’s individual rights.
Azra said that all school activities should be formulated to respect human rights, and this is important in the official as well as the unofficial education programs in schools.
“All school activities should be respectful of human rights. Be it school policies, how one teacher addresses another, how one student addresses another student or their parents – it is important that good examples are set in every situation,” Azra said.
HRCM said that during the workshop which began on 6 March and ended today, teachers were provided with information relating to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Children’s Rights, Democracy and Human Rights, and Human Rights and the Environment.
36 teachers from all schools in Male’, K. Maafushi School and K. Maafushi Children’s Education and Vocational Training Centre participated in the workshop.
