President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that his government would not hesitate in taking any steps necessary to ensure safety of the people and peace and order in the Maldivian society.
The President’s assurance came in his address to the people of SH. Feevah, where he met with the people today afternoon. The President visited Feevah in a trip to SH. Atoll. He is scheduled to visit some other islands of the Atoll as well.
The President said that no one would be arrested or detained except as provided by the law, and that no one would be arrested for holding or expressing a politically dissenting view, or for criticizing the government and its policies.
“We will strive hard to uphold the Maldivian Constitution, and to work within the two limits set down by the laws of this country”, said the President.
The President also said that the government would always work together with the people to try to achieve the goals that the people set for themselves. He also noted that there are many things to be done for the development of Feevah, and that he would soon start the project of building a mosque in the island.
The President also spoke about the importance of a system of drainage and clean water in many islands of the country, and that he would try to provide these basic services to as many islands as possible through government funds and foreign aid, during this year.
The President thanked the people of Feevah for the warm welcome accorded to them.
