Addu City Feydhoo Councilor Ahmed Mirzad and two others have been arrested for consumption of alcohol on the beach of Equator Village.
Police said they discovered drinks suspected to be alcohol on the table from where the councilor and two others were arrested. Police said examination of their urine had also tested positive for alcohol.
Police have not revealed details of the 3 people, but said they were males of ages 28, 45 and 53. The three men were arrested around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning.
Councilor Ahmed Mirzad has an exiting record of vandalizing public property, disobeying police orders and obstructing police duties.
The 45-year-old man is reported to have a record of alcohol consumption.
As a Muslim nation, alcohol is banned for the local population in the Maldives, but is available for tourists in island resorts.
