Thomson Airways has conducted its first flight to Maldives on Boeing’s Dreamliner 787 this morning.
The flight landed at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) at 10:00 a.m. today.
A special ceremony was held at the airport’s VIP Lounge to mark this event. The ceremony was attended by senior officials of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), flight crew, captains, and some students.
Dreamliner is a fuel-efficient aircraft, and has 244 seats in economy class and 47 in premium class.
Managing Director of MACL Bandhu Ibrahim Saleed told reporters that the flight on this aircraft will be operated between London and Male’ every Monday.
“This aircraft will arrive in Male’ weekly. It will facilitate export of fish from the Maldives. This is a great opportunity, especially for fish exporters,” he said.
Managing Director of Thomson Domestic Tour Operator, Voyages Maldives, Solah Shihab also said that this is a great opportunity for the Maldives.
He said that even though this is a charter flight, efforts will be made by tour operators to sell tickets to students and persons traveling for medical reasons to London.
Several large airlines, including Cathay Pacific, Fly Dubai, and Turkish Airlines have recently commenced flights to the Maldives.
