Police stations and vehicles have been damaged, while Police were threatened and attacked with knives late last night.
A Police Official said today that a group on motorbikes riding around Male’ late last night, against traffic regulations and sounding their horns, entered the Traffic Police in Ameenee magu and caused damage to several equipment.
He said that they smashed a computer system on the ground, entered Iskandar Building and threatened Police using knives, and broke a window of Galolhu Police Station.
“A group of people entered the Traffic Police late last night and damaged a computer system by smashing it on the ground. They entered Iskandar Building and threatened Police using knives, and also broke a window of Galolhu Police Station,” the Official said.
The Police also took into custody a group of people at Raalhugan’du area last night, who had attacked a Police vehicle in Henveiru. Confrontations took place between the two parties when Police tried to arrest them.
Thirteen people have been taken into custody following this unrest, and Police are working on arresting even more.
“Police arrested 13 people who entered Raalhugan’du area after attacking a Police vehicle in Henveiru late last night. They are now working on arresting more people related to this unrest. Several people confronted and even assaulted the Police at Raalhugan’du area,” the Official said.
Lately, attacking the Police and their vehicles has become common practice. On 1 March, a Police Officer was attacked while riding his motorbike past Male’ City Council, with his motorbike set on fire subsequent to the attack.
Police search for the suspect, Fawaz Kalhuthu’thu of H. Redhan, ended when he admitted to the crime. The Criminal Court added ten days to his arrest yesterday when he was produced at the Court for his crime.
In addition, a Police vehicle parked on Henveiru Mustharee magu was set on fire last Monday. The Police have taken into custody a man suspected for this crime.
