Disqualification of MPs Azim and Nashiz not in line with court procedure: Parliament

Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid has said that Alifushi MP Mohamed Nashiz and Medhu-Henveiru MP Ali Azim were disqualified as MPs yesterday by the Supreme Court, against the procedure of the Supreme Court.

In a statement, the parliament said that the court rushed the case and issued the ruling in absentia yesterday because voting had been scheduled for Monday, on a no-confidence motion against Attorney General Aishath Azim Shakoor.

According to the statement, the ruling was politically motivated and aimed at obstructing the voting on Monday.

The parliament, despite criticising the ruling, did not say that it will not comply with the ruling.

The parliament said that the ruling is not in line with the court procedure because Judge Mu’uthasim Adnan did not detail his opinion in relation to the ruling.

The case against Azim and Nashiz was filed by Jumhooree Party legal team member, Mohamed Haleem, Alpaso, Noonu Velidhoo.

At the trial in Supreme Court yesterday, Judge Mu’uthasim Adnan said that when requested for time to prepare opinion on this case, some judges refused and proposed to remove him from the bench and appoint a bench of five judges.
