The no-confidence motion against Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor has been tabled for Monday’s parliament sitting.
The Speaker of Parliament sent a letter to all MPs today, informing that the motion has been put on the agenda of the sitting on Monday, 28 October.
The notice of the no-confidence motion, which was presented to parliament by 26 MPs of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was sent to Azima on 1 October.
Article 101 (a) of the Constitution requires the signatures of at least 10 MPs to present a motion of confidence against a member of the cabinet, to parliament.
Article 101 (b) of the Constitution requires the parliament to deliver a notice to the cabinet member, at least fourteen days prior to the parliament debate of the motion and also states that the cabinet member shall have the right to defend himself in the sittings of the parliament, both orally and in writing.
The no-confidence motion against Azima was filed after she backed Jumhooree Party (JP) in court in the case filed by the party against the Elections Commission, requesting to annul the result of the first round of the presidential election.
In addition to Azima, MDP has also filed a no-confidence motion against Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim. The parliament has sent him the 14-day notice, but the motion against Nazim has not yet been tabled.
Parliament Secretary General Ahmed Mohamed said that he will provide information on scheduling the motion against Nazim tomorrow.
