Verification is not an obstacle for elections: Nasheed

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate, former president Mohamed Nasheed has said that verification of fingerprints on re-registration forms is not an obstacle to conducting the election.

A tweet published from Nasheed’s official twitter account today stated that, “The best way to determine the authenticity of a fingerprint is by asking the person listed on the form. Verification is not an obstacle for election.”

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Sunday demanded that all fingerprints on all forms be fully verified. MDP and Jumhoory Party have said that verification is unnecessary if no issue is identified and that it is understandable that all fingerprints cannot be verified.

Supreme Court issued an order upon the Elections Commission on Sunday to verify fingerprints of voters with the Department of National Registration (DNR), if the need arises.

Elections Commission has since said that they will verify a form and its fingerprint, if an issue is identified.
