Fifteen phone lines suspended for issuing death threats

Fifteen phone lines have been suspended for issuing death threats to officials of the Election Commission (EC) following the injunction by the court to delay the second round of the presidential election.

CEO of Communication Authority of Maldives (CAM), Ilyas Ahmed told Sun Online today that services to the fifteen numbers were suspended after confirming that death threats were issued from those numbers.

“We also received a lot of complaints during that period. The police have also filed cases regarding several numbers. We only take action if there’s a serious problem with a number, and after filing the case to the police. This is a criminal offence and there is a judicial procedure to be completed, so we’re filing them to the police,” said Ilyas.

He said that the suspended phone lines include both Dhiraagu and Wataniya numbers.

CAM earlier warned that services will be suspended without warning for those who issue death threats over the phone.
