Queue numbers issued for the re-registration on Saturday were stretched on to Sunday morning, as large numbers of people queued up at the Elections Commission Registration Section to re-register for the fresh presidential election to be held on 19th October.
Re-registration is required for voters who wish to vote from a location other than their permanent residences. The 24-hour re-registration period expired at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Elections Commission’s Registration Section issued over 3000 tokens for re-registration within the 24-hour period. The majority of tokens were withdrawn by political parties. Individuals who forced to stay overnight went home on Sunday morning, after handing the forms over their forms to political party volunteers.
A total of 13 counters are working no-stop at the Registration Section. Political parties are submitting forms in stacks of thousand. Some individuals were choose to pool their forms and hand them over to a party volunteer, who submits them in stacks of 10s and 20s.
In a press conference on Saturday night, President of the Elections Commission Fuad Thaufeeq said that over 60,000 voters are predicted to re-register for the rerun election. He said that over 10,300 forms with fingerprints have been checked and admitted by the commission by nightfall on Saturday.The commission is yet to receive forms from overseas cities, tourist resorts, jails and islands in the atolls, Fuad said.
Over 60,000 voters re-registered for the September 7th presidential election, which was annulled by the Supreme Court, ordering fresh elections within 13 days of the annulment.
