EU restates its confidence in Election Commission

The European Union (EU) has, in a statement, restated its confidence in the Elections Commission of the Maldives to hold the imminent presidential election in full compliance with national and international standards.

In the statement issued yesterday, EU High Representative Catherine Ashton noted the decision by the Supreme Court to annul the first round of elections in the Maldives, and said that the international community recognized the outcome of the first round as inclusive and credible.

The statement reads: “Under these circumstances, I urge that elections planned for 20 October take place in full compliance with national and international standards and that the Maldives democratic institutions are safeguarded and the will of the people respected. The EU restates its confidence in the ability of the Election Commission to ensure this.”
