MNDF begins providing security for TV stations

Maldives military, the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has started providing security for all local television stations in the capital Male'.

The move follows an arson attack on local television station Raajje TV on Monday morning where arsonists broke into the station after assaulting the building’s security guard.

MNDF spokesperson Colonel Abdul Raheem said that they have started providing security for all television stations, following Monday morning’s arson attack.

He said that soldiers are currently placed near TV stations but said that are also cautious of the safety of all media outlets in the capital Male’.

He noted that the military has always maintained security in the capital, whenever the need arose, and that the new security arrangements have been put in place indefinitely.

Police said that they have been providing security for media stations that have requested for the security.

Raajje TV states that the station's broadcast equipment have been rendered useless in the fire. Local TV station VTV was also set on fire during the unrest that followed the controversial change of government in February last year.
