HRCM condemns use of sticks by protesters

Maldives' chief human rights body, Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned the use of wooden sticks and batons by protesters in an attempt create unrest during the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protests, Saturday night.

In the statement released today, HRCM called on protesters to conduct their protests peacefully and for protesters and security forces, particularly during their efforts to disperse crowds, to act within the boundaries of the law.

HRCM also called on political parties to be mindful to frame their activities to not hamper the efforts of students preparing for the GCE O-Level exams, which began on Saturday.

Geared with sticks, helmets and gas masks, protesters were prepared for confrontations with the security forces during Saturday night’s protests. Protesters also vandalized the CCTV cameras in the Majeedhee Magu, Orchid Magu intersection.

MDP has staged nightly protests calling for the Supreme Court to lift the injunction postponing the second round of the presidential election and demanding quick elections. Supreme Court injunction followed a case filed by the Jumhoory Party, citing irregularities surrounding the first round of the elections and asking the court to annul the election results. Supreme Court is expected to issue a verdict for Jumhoory Party's election case on Monday.
