Presidential candidate for the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen has stated that maintaing the verdicts of the courts and upholding the rule of law is the only way to maintain peace in the Maldives.
Yameen made his statements while speaking at PPM rally in Artificial Beach on Saturday night. He said that Maldives should hold free, fair and transparent elections through maintaining the verdicts of the courts and upholding the rule of law.
“The Maldives will see peace though maintaining the verdicts and the rule of law. We say the system has failed because this has not happened yet,” Yameen said.
He said that the country’s system of governance had failed when the Maldives conducted the first round of the presidential elections and that Maldives was being governed by a failed system even when the government changed in 7th February 2012.
He stressed that Maldives should elect a president through fair and credible elections and said that the law requires the Elections Commission to hold transparent presidential elections.
Concluding his speech, Yameen alluded to former president Mohamed Nasheed by stating that Maldivians should consider how far the law will prevail if Maldivians elect a president who has obstructed the rule of law to his benefit.
