Maldives Customs Service has apprehended a Filipino woman trying to transport Methamphetamine.
A synthetic drug commonly known as meth, Methamphetamine is not known to be in circulation in the Maldives.
Nearly three kilograms of meth was discovered from the woman who landed in the Maldives on the 20th of September on a plane from Dubai.
Customs said that they suspect her to have come landed in the Maldives on transit, transporting the drugs from Africa country to Thailand. The dugs have been handed over to the police.
Senior Superintendent of Customs Ahmed Niyaz said that although not common in the Maldives, Methamphetamine is widely produced in African countries and that it holds a high demand in the Asia Pacific region, including Thailand and Malaysia. He said that smugglers often use Maldives, and other neighbouring, counties as transit destinations.
Customs revealed that the drugs were hidden inside a concealed compartment in the woman’s luggage.
Maldivian authorities apprehended another Filipino trying to smuggle more than 3 kilograms of cocain, earlier this year. In 2006, a mega shipment of drugs weighing a total of 1.6 tons believed to be stored on transit were found underwater, in a shallow lagoon in the Maldives.
