Maldives will obey the courts, not the demands of street mobs, says Yameen

Presidential candidate for the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen said that the Maldives will obey the rulings of the Maldivian courts and that rules of the mob shall not dictate the country.

Yameen made his statement while speaking at a campaign event in Kaafu Maafushi on Tuesday night.

“I would like to tell the politicians, this is my sincere advice. You can take it as a warning if you wish, but the Maldives will obey the rulings of the judicial courts. Street rulings will not work in the Maldives,” Yameen said.

Directing his comments at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Mohamed Nasheed, he alluded that Nasheed owes his freedom to participate in politics to the “kindness of the Supreme Court and the judges.”

“Politicians should know today that certain politicians, in the name of revealing their policies, is able to breathe in the political arena through the kindness of the Supreme Court and the judges. The only reason they can breathe the air in the Maldives is because their cases have not been closed,” Yameen said.

He said that the PPM will never defy a judicial ruling and that the Maldives can only achieve peace through PPM.

Yameen further criticized former president Nasheed by saying that the Maldives does not want a government that calls for the abuse of police and the military.

In his speech, Yameen pledged to relieve the congestions in Kaafu Maafushi and further develop guest house businesses on the island.
