Leader of Jumhoory Party Gasim Ibrahim has described former Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed’s recent statements calling on the Indian government to invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) on the Maldives, as “an act of brutality.”
Speaking at JP’s main campaign post M. Kunooz last night, Gasim Ibrahim said Dr Shaheed’s statements was a “an act of brutality” and that Maldivians will not accept losing their freedom.
“Yes, this is the second time Dr Shaheed has called on the Indian army to take over this country. I strongly condemn Dr Ahmed Shaheed’s brutal words of a traitor,” Gasim said.
Maldivian courts are capable of serving justice, he said, and stressed that a foreign party must not be able to influence the domestic affairs of the country.
He said that the reactions and handling of the presidential election by the Elections Commission and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has caused the international community to see the Maldives as a country without values, and criticized MDP for their protests against the Supreme Court injunction to postpone the second round of the polls.
Gasim accused MDP of having a special association with the Elections Commission and called on all parties to respect and recognize the Supreme Court in its rightful status, as the highest and final court of law in the Maldives.
Gasim Ibrahim also called on the people to stop the wave of arson attacks and other forms of violence that has gripped the country following the postponement of the election.
