BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Newell's Old Boys defeated Argentinos Juniors 2-0 on Sunday to maintain a narrow lead atop Argentina's first-division standings.
Former Liverpool star Maxi Rodriguez scored both goals, giving Newell's the lead in the 20th and making it 2-0 with a penalty in the 37th.
Boca Juniors improved to 16 points — four behind Newell's — with Emmanuel Gigliotti scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory over Quilmes.
San Lorenzo improved to 19 points, one behind the leaders, with a 3-0 victory Saturday against Gimnasia.
In other results Sunday: Tigre 1, Colon 0; Belgrano 3, Racing Club 0.
In Boca's victory, coach Carlos Bianchi was able to play his top two midfielders together — Fernando Gago and Juan Roman Riquelme — for the first time this season.
Gigliotti scored in the 33rd and added the other in the 87th.
Racing, one of Argentina's five traditional "big clubs," is lodged in last place with only two points following a 3-0 loss to Belgrano. Cesar Pereyra scored in the 28th and 77th and Carlos Bueno added the other in the 84th for Belgrano.
Ramiro Leone scored in Tigre's 1-0 victory against Colon.
