Police officer injured by MDP thugs flown to Sri Lanka for treatment

One of the police officers who were injured by thuggish activists of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), during their violent attacks on the police units barricading passageways to the People’s Majlis, has been taken to Sri Lanka for medical treatment.

Sub Inspector and Police Media Official Ahmed Shiyam said today that the officer sent to Lanka had sustained serious head injuries.

MDP thugs confronted police under instruction from Party leadership, after MDP decided not to let President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to deliver the Annual Presidential Address in the Opening Session of the Majlis for this year.

The Session was scheduled to begin today at 10 o’clock. However, MDP activists marched towards the People’s Majlis and confronted with stones, iron and wooden rods, petrol, and other sharp and heavy objects the police units which were barricading all passageways leading to the Majlis Building for security reasons.

MDP thugs attacked the police and injured 14 police officers, of whom 4 suffered serious injuries. It was one of these who was flown to Lanka.

MDP thugs also halted two police officers on motorbikes on Majeedy Magu, and attacked them, burning the motorbike of one of them. However, Police Media Official said that these two police officers did not suffer serious physical injuries.

As MDP supporters stopped Malé with their terrorizing acts of violence, MDP Parliamentarians displayed similar behaviour inside the Majlis Chamber, and did not allow the Session to be conducted today. After more than 10 hours of tiring efforts, Majlis Speaker Abdullah Shahid finally decided to postpone the Opening Session.
