Three dangerous criminals placed under house arrest; they will be arrested if they leave their homes

The Criminal Court has placed three dangerous criminals under house arrest today, following requests from parents for a more lenient punishment for them.

The offenders placed under house arrest for 15 days are Ahmed Shirhan Shameem of Zaheera Manzil, M. Kolhufushi; Rilwaan Farhath of H. Hamaroalhi; and Hauzan Nizam of Dhilkashvilla, Ga. Dhaandhoo.

The Criminal Court Judge said at the hearing held today that the three criminals were summoned to court following their parents’ request for a more lenient punishment for them. The offenders have been under arrest for a long time.

The Judge cited the lack of criminal records for these individuals as a reason for placing them under house arrest. He also said that they will be arrested if they leave their homes during this period.

The offenders expressed happiness and thanked the Judge following the decision to place them under house arrest.

“Thank you, thank you very much!” they said smiling.

The state’s case raised against them is participation in an illegal gathering armed with dangerous weapons. Two additional offenders charged with this offense include Aseel Ismail of H. Agi and Mohamed Navvir of Hithilaage, Ga. Vilingili.

Aseel was attacked and chased from Majeedee magu till Nirolhu magu on 18 December 2010 by individuals armed with sharp weapons.

State lawyers indicated earlier that no case was raised against them due to lack of evidence.

The hearing for this case was scheduled at the Criminal Court for 11 January 2012, but cancelled due to the absence of witnesses.

Unrest was created in the court following that cancellation.

Aseel was charged with attacking someone using a mallet and sentenced to prison for seven years. Navvir was released.

Hauzam was accused of importing alcohol to the Maldives and fined Rf 1,000 by Criminal Court in June last year.
