MP Abdul Raheem rushed to the hospital amid chaos in parliament

Shahuban Fahumee Deputy Leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla was injured tonight during the clashes between MPs in parliament during the extraordinary session held on Sunday night. Fuvahmulah-central MP Shifaq Mufeed also received injuries to his hand during the scuffles. Speaker of the Parliament adjourned the session amidst shouting and disorder by PPM and Jumhoory Party (JP) MP’s and announced that the session will resume at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning. The attempts to disrupt the session was mainly led by PPM, JP and independent MPs, with Vaikaradhoo MP Ali Arif using a whistle, and JP deputy leader, Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed using a vuvuzela-type plastic horn to create noise and upset the session. Several JP and PPM MPs, including MP Shifaq Mufeed, Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem (Redwave Saleem), MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem were seen crowding in front of the parliament chair and secretariat in their attempts to disrupt the session. The MPs also made several attempts to interrupt MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem and MP Moosa Manik while they were addressing the floor. Speaking at a press conference after the session was adjourned, PPM’s vice presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed said that MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla had received injuries to his chest and other places, and that his condition was serious. Dr Jameel described the incident as an an attack on the MP’s life. Shahuban Fahumee MDP MP Ali Waheed was pushed PPM MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla while MP Abdul Raheem was standing on top of the table of the parliament secretariat. MP Abdul Raheem was saved from falling to the ground by PPM MPs nearby. A heated argument ensued between MP Abdul Raheem and MP Ali Waheed. A brawl has taken place between MP Moosa Manik and MP Ahmed Ilham, after MP Ahmed Ilham tried to disrupt MP Moosa Manik while he was speaking to the floor, by blowing a loud horn into his microphone. MP Ilham’s horn has been snatched away. Speaker Abdulla Shahid has announced a recess amidst the chaos. The Speaker did not say when the session will resume.
