MDP will decided how to act in the Majlis later

As the People’s Majlis is about to begin its third session on Thursday this week, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that its Parliamentary Group would decided later on how they would react in the Majlis to the political changes that have taken place during the first week of this month, while the Majlis was on recess.

When the Majlis went on recess last year, MDP was in power, and its leader Mohamed Nasheed was President of the country. However, on the 7th of this month, Nasheed was forced to resign, when the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force joined with the people in protesting Nasheed Administrations continuous and repeated violations of the Constitution and the law and orders of the law courts.

After that, a number of court cases against MPs belonging to MDP and sympathetic to the party have lost their seats in Parliament, as their cases delayed due to MDP’s intimidation of the Judiciary were finally rolled on.

MDP has repeatedly claimed that its leader Nasheed resigned on the 7th of this month from presidency due to “duress” and that it was an “unlawful rebellion”. Nasheed himself, and a number of MPs had previously warned that they would not let current President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik to enter Majlis House on Thursday.

MDP Parliamentary Group had planned to hold a meeting today to discuss how they would react in the Majlis on that day. However, the meeting was canceled, and it was announced that the matter would be dealt with later.

Ibrahim “Iboo” Mohamed Saalih, Leader of MDP Parliamentary Group said today that PG meeting was canceled because MPs had to attend the talks currently being held among political parties to find an amicable solution to the political turmoil in the country.
