MDP passes resolution calling to prepone next session of parliament

The national council of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has passed a resolution to call upon the parliament to conduct the next parliament session ahead of schedule.

In their resolution, the party's national council today decided inform the party's parliamentary group to commence communications with the parliament to prepone their next session.

A statement released by MDP today asserted that they will not allow the election results to be changed through the judiciary.

MDP candidate and former president Mohamed Nasheed won the first round of presidential polls held on 7th this month. Nasheed gained 45 percent of the votes.

Jumhoory Party, who won 24 percent and ended up in third place close behind the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has filed a case in Supreme Court asking to annul the election results.

MDP spokesperson MP Imthiyaz Fahmy said that all decisions by the national council today were made through unanimous vote of all members present.

The party’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed chaired the national council meeting today.
