Chivas beats Santos to end winless streak

MEXICO CITY— (AP) — Luis Michel saved a last-minute penalty from U.S. international Herculez Gomez as Chivas of Guadalajara ended its 13-game winless streak by defeating Santos Laguna 2-1 on Sunday in the eighth round of Mexico*s first division.

The win came a day after Dutch great Johan Cruyff was officially announced as a part-time advisor at Mexico's most successful club.

Morelia's 2-0 win against Cruz Azul moved it into first position in the Clausura tournament and inflicted Cruz Azul*s first defeat of the season, while America won 4-0 against Atlante and moves into second.

In other weekend results: Pachuca drew 1-1 with Tigres, Monterrey defeated Puebla 2-1, Club Tijuana drew 1-1 against Toluca, Pumas and Queretaro drew 1-1, Jaguares won 1-0 against Estudiantes Tecos and Atlas got a 1-0 victory against San Luis. In Guadalajara, Marco Fabian headed in at the near post from a right wing cross to open the scoring for Chivas in the 38th minute, with Cruyff in the stands watching.

Erick Torres scored in the 58th minute after Santos Laguna keeper Oswaldo Sanchez spilled a simple save, but Gomez scored with a looping header in the 78th to set up a nervous finish for Chivas.

Gomez won a penalty in second half injury time that Michel saved comfortably with the final whistle sounding soon afterward.

Also Sunday, Ecuadorian Joao Rojas headed the ball over Cruz Azul goalkeeper in the 36th and Miguel Sabah scored the second for Morelia in the 82nd.

On Saturday, America opened the scoring in the 3rd minute against Atlante when Jesus Molina headed in from a corner. Christian Benitez added the second from the penalty spot, before Christian Bermudez took advantage of a defensive mix-up for the third.

Gerardo Castillo was sent off for Atlante in the 79th minute, before Venezuelan Oswaldo Vizcarrondo headed in the last goal three minutes later.

Elias Hernandez scored from short range in second half injury time to rescue a draw for champions Tigres.

Pachuca had taken the lead when Leobardo Lopez scored a penalty in the 23rd. Chile striker Humberto Suazo scored from the edge of the area in the 5th for Monterrey, after Antonio de Nigris had set him up for a shot with a back-heeled pass.

Lucas Silva equalized for Puebla in the 38th, before de Nigris scrambled the ball in from close range in the 52nd.

Club Tijuana went ahead when U.S. Olympic hopeful Joe Corona finished from a left wing cross in the 15th, but Uruguayan Ivan Alonso scored his ninth goal of the season to equalize 10 minutes later.

Juan Carlos Cacho headed the opener for Pumas on Sunday, with Amaury Ponce getting Queretaro's goal in the 53rd.

A goal from Colombian Luis Rey gave Jaguares a victory over Estudiantes Tecos, which fell further behind in the relegation race.

Flavio Santos got the only goal two minutes after halftime for Atlas, after San Luis had gone down to 10 men when Isai Arredondo was sent off in the 28th. Atlante*s Moises Velasco was also shown a red card in the 70th.

San Luis coach Rene Isidoro resigned after the game.
