Government has today commissioned the Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) to establish sewerage systems in nine islands, for a sum of MVR 491 million.
The project agreements were signed by Minister of Environment and Energy Dr. Mariyam Shakeela and the Managing Director of MWSC Mohamed Ahmed Didi, at an event held in the President’s Office today.
Minister Shakeela told Sun that the projects are being funded by the government and have been agreed to be completed within the next one and a half years.
“MWSC has given us great flexibility. That is the reason we decided to hand them the project. I hope that it will be completed within the specified time,” the Minister said.
The islands designated for projects are; Haa Alif Kelaa, Haa alif Ihavandhoo, Haa Alif Hoarafushi, Haa Dhaalu Nolhivaram, Shaviyani Kanditheemu, Noonu Holhudhoo and Raa Maduvvari.
Minister Shakeel also said that sewerage system projects for five different islands will soon commence under a MVR 50 million loan provided by the Asian Development Bank.
