Four MPs stand for JSC seat

Four Members of Parliament have submitted their names for Judicial Service Commission (JSC) membership, the Commission’s seat reserved for the parliament.

The MPs who have come forth are; Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliamentary Group Member, Bileidhoo MP Ahmed Hamza, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group Member, Maavashu MP Abdul Azeez Jamaal Aboobakuru, Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Parliamentary Group Member, Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed and independent member Kanditheemu MP Mohamed Hussain.

Parliament will vote for the appointment at 1:30 p.m. today, 20th August. The member who receives majority vote will later be appointed to the Commission.

Parliament's JSC seat became vacant when Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim decided to contest in this year's September presidential election.

Article 10 (d) of the JSC Act states that the seat of a JSC member shall be deemed vacant if the member decides to contest for a political position, elected under the Constitution or the Law.

MP Gasim Ibrahim followed former Ungoofaaru MP Dr. Afrasheem Ali to the JSC seat, who was voted out through a no-confidence vote orchestrated by MDP.
