Turkey has agreed to provide the means necessary to strengthen the police service: Police Commissioner

Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has said that Turkey has agreed to facilitate higher education opportunities from Turkey for Maldivian police officers, and also provide the means necessary to strengthen the Maldives Police Service.

Riyaz told Police Life regarding his official visit to Turkey from 13 to 17 August that Turkey has provided five scholarships for bachelor’s degree courses and two scholarships for master’s degree courses from the Turkish National Police Academy’s courses scheduled to start next month.

He said that work is ongoing to determine which police officers receive these scholarships.

According to the police website, the main purpose of the commissioner’s visit to Turkey was to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Maldives and Turkey in relation to security.

Riyaz said that his visit to Turkey was very successful, and that under the MoU, Turkey will facilitate training and education opportunities from Turkey for Maldivian police officers, and also provide the means necessary to strengthen police service.

Riyaz said that Turkey will provide in-service training to Maldivian police officers to ensure successful investigation of drug crimes, corruption, and serious organised crimes, and that the two countries will share information and provide assistance in their efforts against transnational crimes.

The MoU was signed on 17 August by Commissioner Riyaz on behalf of the Maldives Police Service, and the Police Director General of the Turkish Police on behalf of the Turkish Police.
