Ministry of Environment and Energy has signed an agreement with the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) to establish water drainage systems in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo and Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, with the purpose of preventing floods in the islands.
Planned to be implemented in two phases, the first phase of the project will see the designing of the drainage system, with emphasis on protecting the shorelines of the islands. Environment Ministry states that the design phase will be completed within four months and that the second phase is scheduled to begin later this year.
The establishment of the drainage systems in Thinadhoo and Kulhuduffushi is estimated to cost MVR 9 million.
Minister of State for Environment Abdul Matheen signed the project agreement on behalf of the government and Manager, Engineering Mohamed Rasheed signed the agreement on behalf of MWSC.
Abdul Matheen said this pilot project is being implemented through a grant by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and that it is the first step towards preventing floods in the islands. He said that the project will be expanded to include more islands, depending on the success of the initial project.
