Case against Elections Commissions Director Haneefa Khalid sent to AG Office

The police have sent a case to the Attorney General’s (AG) Office against Head of Legal Department and Complaints Bureau of Elections Commission, lawyer Haneefa Khalid, accusing her of attempting to defame the police.

The police have confirmed to Sun that such a case has been sent to the AG Office, but refused to provide details.

AG Aishath Azima Shakoor also told Sun Online that a case related to Haneefa Khalid is under investigation, and that it was not possible to provide details at this stage.

Sun has come to know that Haneefa Khalid visited the police investigation prison, Atholhu Vehi, in relation to the case wherein $122,000 was stolen from Relax Inn, and said “money, money” at the police officers there.

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Jumhooree Party (JP) have also filed complaints against Haneefa Khalid to the police.

PPM Spokesperson Ahmed Mahloof said that following the highest honour by the State being conferred on former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Haneefa Khalid tweeted that the award was soaked in blood.

Mahloof said that public confidence in the Elections Commission might be undermined if a high post in the commission is held by someone who criticises politicians and tweets politically aligned messages.
