Will reduce political salaries by 50 percent: Yameen

Presidential candidate for the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen has pledged to reduce salaries for political posts by 30 to 50 percent and increase the salaries of civil servants, if he wins the September presidential elections this year.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Raa Dhuvaafaru last night, Yameen said that a PPM government will not, by any circumstance, reduce the salaries of civil servants, but on the contrary, work to increase them.

“There shall be no circumstance that the civil service salaries can be reduced. Civil service salaries will increase, depending how prosperous we become,” Yameen said.

Yameen also pledged to reduce the salary of the president by 50 percent.

“I will reduce the number of all political posts relatively, and bring down salaries for political posts by 30 to 50 percent,” Yameen said.

He said that reducing the number of political posts and their salaries are necessary steps to keep the country debt free.
